How Skin Pigmentation is Formed

Skin pigmentation (melanogenesis) is a natural process where your melanocytes, a cell located in the lower epidermis basal layer, produce melanin to protect your skin against the solar radiation UVA/UVB. Melanin is produced by the oxidisation of the amino acid tyrosine. The natural process of flaking and skin renewal eliminates the melanin. Skin pigmentation disorders occur when excessive localised melanin is produced because of external (sun) or internal (hormone) influences. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production leading to uneven patches of lighter or darker skin.

GentleMax Pro- Treating Skin Types I-III

Skin type I to III are less susceptible to PIH therefore the GentleMax Pro laser is a great option to treat skin pigmentation conditions as the larger spot size means larger areas like décolletage can be treated quickly. GentleMax Pro is one of the most effective laser treatments to resolve lentigines (freckles) on the face and decolletage (chest area). This solution is more cost-effective than the PicoWay.

PicoWay- Treating Skin Types IV-VI

The PicoWay is the latest generation Picosecond laser skin pigmentation removal device. It allows Detail Smoother Skin to treat skin pigmentation for all skin types in the shortest time possible, with next to no heat. Heat from other lasers can stimulate post- inflammatory-pigmentation (PIH) to form in skin type IV to VI. This is the reason why normal lasers are not advisable on dark skin and can have side effects of laser treatment on face. You treat the present pigmentation but then cause PIH to form after the treatment. PicoWay is really the only current solution available for skin types that produce more melanin in ethnicity backgrounds from:

  • Asia
  • Indian
  • South America
  • Mediterranean
  • Middle East
  • Africa

5 Key Advantages of PicoWay

  • Shortest picosecond pulses – 40%-50% shorter pulses than other Picosecond Laser Systems means highly effective treatments with photoacoustic effect and low risk of side-effects like tissue damage
  • Highest peak power – energy shatters pigment into minuscule fragments achieving fast clearance
  • Dual wavelengths – 3 highly effective wavelengths (1064 nm, 785nm & 532 nm) in one picosecond system to treat all skin types
  • No recovery time
  • Less pain than other lasers

Treating Melasma

Melasma is a much more difficult type of pigmentation due to the internal and external triggers. Therefore the treatment protocol is much more complex and it is rather management rather than a solution. See melasma treatment for further information.

PicoWay- Frequently Asked Questions

How Pigmentation Laser Removal Works

Medical grade lasers remove skin pigmentation by delivering specific wavelengths of laser light into the skin in very short bursts of picosecond or microsecond pulses of energy, creating a shockwave that fragments the pigment and allows the body’s immune system to attack and eliminate the dispersed pigment. The body’s immune system removes the fragmented pigment. The number of treatments is determined by the laser system used and the person’s immune system response. The clinicians at Detail Smoother Skin are responsible for explaining this process thoroughly during the free consultation. Each expertly trained and accredited clinician will assess your skin type and adjust the laser to provide the optimum setting to deliver the results you expect with minimum discomfort.

How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments depends on the severity of the pigment and the skin type. To clear pigmentation, it can take between 4-6 treatments. Dark skin types may take over 6 as you can not use high fluence due to the risk of hypo-pigmentation.

What is the recovery after a treatment?

There is very little laser pigmentation removal recovery time. You will experience redness for 24 hours. The time between treatments is 4 weeks.

How much do laser skin treatments cost?

The cost of your treatment will depend on many factors including size of the pigment or the laser system. PicoWay is a faster system and is the only choice for skin type IV and above. GentleMax Pro is a more cost-effective option but is more suitable for skin type III and below. To get a guide on face laser treatment cost, please see the pigmentation removal Price List page.
